Designing for "Zero": How We’re Revolutionising Event Signage at STRONG PR

We’ve all seen it - the "post-event hangover." The morning after a high-energy activation or a prestigious corporate conference; the glamour fades to reveal skips filled with single-use PVC banners, discarded foamboard signs, and "date-stamped" collateral that served its purpose for exactly eight hours.
As a designer; seeing beautiful work headed straight for a landfill is heartbreaking but this doesn’t have to be the norm. While an event is ephemeral by nature; the potential environmental impact of one can last for decades. Through our work alongside the Event Greening Forum; we’ve made it our mission to treat sustainability not as a creative constraint but as a design mandate.
It’s time to move away from the "disposable" mindset and embrace the Sustainable Signage Revolution.
The Myth of the "Disposable" Brand
Historically, event branding has been built on a "print and purge" model. We’ve been conditioned to think that for a brand to feel fresh and bespoke; every piece of signage must be custom-printed and singular in its purpose – which means discarding it once the last guest leaves.
The shift we are seeing in 2026 is toward evergreen design. This is the art of creating high-impact visuals that are modular, adaptable, and designed with their "next life" in mind. It’s about asking:
How can this piece of branding serve our client not just today, but for the next three activations?
Strategies for Sustainable Brilliance
Transitioning to a greener event doesn’t mean sacrificing the "wow" factor. In fact, it often forces us to be more innovative. Here are a few ways we are rethinking signage at STRONG PR:
Digital-First Canvas: By leveraging LED walls and high-lumen projection mapping; we can transform a venue’s atmosphere instantly. We can swap sponsor logos, update schedules, and change moods without printing a single square metre of vinyl.
Material Innovation: We are swapping out traditional PVC for incredible alternatives like Xanita board - a high-strength, lightweight fibreboard made from recycled paper. It’s 100% repulpable and offers a fantastic textured finish that takes ink beautifully.
Modular Typography: Instead of printing a massive backdrop with a date and location baked in; we look to design modular systems. By creating a high-quality base brand and using swappable elements for specific details; the core infrastructure of the signage becomes a reusable asset for the client’s annual programme.
The Aesthetic of Intentionality
There is a common misconception that green design looks "recycled" in a way that feels unpolished. We argue the opposite. There is a premium, human-centric quality to natural textures - unbleached paper, reclaimed wood, and sustainable fabrics -that plastic simply cannot replicate.
These materials tell a story. They signal to your guests that your brand is intentional, forward-thinking, and cares about the footprint it leaves behind. It’s about maintaining that bold, STRONG aesthetic while ensuring our substrates are as responsible as they are beautiful.
Designing for "The Day After"
Sustainability in the event industry is a collective effort. It requires a partnership between the designer, the organiser, and the client to prioritise the planet from the first mood board.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple:
We aren’t just designing for the four-hour activation; we are designing for the day after, the year after, and the legacy of the brand.
